The sustained local team over a great period of time is Gornal Athletic F.C., a non-league side
which has had moderate success over the years.

In the early days of football, other teams sprang up in the district, such as
Gornal Wood Excelsior and Lower Gornal Victoria and covered here on separate pages.
Football being a big interest of the local miners, with teams made up of such and
sponsored mainly by publicans, both of which there was plentiful supply.
Not much is known about these early teams except that their members
were made up of the local working men, principly miners who were hardy characters to say the least.
