Works
Hermit Cupola Chimneys
Hermit Industries Co.
Hermit Street, Upper Gornal and later Holloway Street, Lower Gornal.
Hermit Industries was established in 1947.
The works was originaly sited at 21 Hermit Street, Upper Gornal and operated from were
there until around 1970.
In February 1964, part of the works at Hermit Street suffered significant damage
when a fire broke out in the pattern shop, just after the workers had departed.
By 1972 the works moved to a new site on the Holloway Street, Lower gornal,
adjacent to the Fibre Form Company.
The foundry produced ferrous and non-ferrous castings for the engineering industry.
The cupola 'chimneys' were a distinctive albeit ugly local landmark, but an integral part of
producing castings. The furnaces located at the bottom of these stacks were coke fired.
The works was rather unpopular with nearby residents because of the smell and dust emitted
from the prominent fifty foot stacks, this was one factor that eventually resulted
in the closure of the foundry.
The foundry closed shortly after 1992
with the loss of eighteen jobs, the firm not being able
to meet pollutant requirements and suffering from foreign competition.
In 2000, Hermit Industries was dissolved, and the subsequent demolition
or the factory followed shortly after.
The site, along with that of the adjacent Fibre Form works which was demolished a little later, was redeveloped for residential housing which now occupies this area of Holloway Street. Trade advert c 1960
