The Quarry Club Youth Centre occupied a building which formed part of the old Upper Gornal Board School,
later to become known as the Tudor Schools.
This building was built as part of the expansion of the main School situated on Clarence Street,
The 'Quarries' as it was also know, was a youth club which in its heyday in the
1960s offered a great venue for teenagers, the club provided disco and live music
as well as the usual youth activities like table tennis and snooker.
It was well known and attended during the period 1967 to 1969 for the live music nights,
after this time it was more closely controlled by the local authority and returned
to normal youth club activities.
During this 'golden' period the Club hosted many noted 1960's groups including Chicken Shack, Fairport Convention
and Slade, as well as many other bands from the Midlands and beyond.
The Club was situated next to the recreation/playing fields which now hide the old sandstone quarries in this location - thus the name.
The building was demolished sometime between 1993 and 1996.
